 Project Description
KKL-JNF is planning to establish a system for recycling water for three kibbutzim in the western Negev near the border with Gaza. The kibbutzim, Nahal Oz, Kfar-Aza and Mefalsim are expanding and some 70 new families have applied to be accepted into the new expansion project. In order to expand the kibbutzim must upgrade their sewage systems.

KKL-JNF will help by developing a system to convey the sewage to a nearby treatment plant where it will be purified to the highest level available at present and used to irrigate field crops at these kibbutzim. Recycled water is both less expensive and far more environmentally-friendly than standard freshwater irrigation. Without this additional source of water the kibbutzim will be forced to reduce the amount of crops they grow, which will make accepting new members more difficult.

Location
Nahal Oz, Kfar-Aza and Mefalsim are kibbutzim in the northwestern Negev near Gaza.

Project Goals
• To save fresh water by using alternative water sources for irrigation.
• To increase the Negev population by expanding existing communities and providing them with sources of revenue.
• To improve quality of life for Negev residents.

Rationale
Life for the people in the communities bordering on Gaza is not easy, with constant artillery barrages and the tension they create. Nevertheless there are new families that want to move to the area and enjoy the good things it has to offer – a rural atmosphere, close-knit communities and a good educational system.

Three kibbutzim, Nahal Oz, Kfar-Aza and Mefalsim are now accepting new families who are making the move despite the difficult conditions in the area.

One of the main sources of income in these communities is agriculture, which of course requires water. In order to maintain and expand the current level of farming a new, less expensive source of water is essential. The new planned irrigation system will be just that, as well as environmentally-friendly, and will facilitate implementation of the new expansion plan.

Donation Impact
By contributing to the development of the recycled water irrigation system in the Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council you are supporting sensible water use in Israel’s
desert. Water is a scarce and precious resource in the Negev and recycling it for re-use saves water and money and is good for the environment.

Your donation will allow the residents of Nahal Oz, Kfar-Aza and Mefalsim to expand the scope of their agricultural activity and absorb new families that wish to move to the region. The new KKL-JNF recycled water project will reduce the price of water for agriculture, benefit the environment and support the people who risk their lives daily just by living in the Gaza region.
